River Gallo
River Gallo
River Gallo (born c.1990) is a Salvadoran-American filmmaker, actor, model, and intersex activist who wrote, directed and starred in Ponyboi (2019), the first film to feature an intersex actor playing an intersex character. Born without fully formed genitals, River was told at an early age by doctors that it would be necessary to receive hormone therapy and surgery as a teenager to ‘look and feel like a normal man’. Rejecting such orthodoxy, and discovering and embracing the term ‘intersex’, River has since become an outspoken opponent of unnecessary cosmetic surgeries being imposed on children before they are old enough to give informed consent. River’s short film Ponyboi was created while studying for a master’s degree at the University of Southern California, and was co-produced by Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson and Seven Graham. Named in Out magazine’s ‘Most Exciting Queers to Follow on Instagram’, River Gallo has gone on to appear in the Hulu teen drama series Love, Victor (a spin-off from the 2018 film Love, Simon), playing one of Simon’s LGBT roommates.
