Olly Alexander
Olly Alexander
Olly Alexander (born 1990) is a British musician and actor. After studying at the Hereford College of Arts, he made his big-screen debut in Jane Campion’s 2009 film Bright Star, featuring Ben Whishaw as John Keats: Olly played the poet’s younger brother. In the same year he appeared in the slasher film Tormented, the science fiction thriller Dust, and the psychological drama Enter the Void. ‘All of a sudden I was an actor,’ he later reflected. ‘I really wanted to become a singer or a musician.’ Sure enough, he joined the band Years & Years shortly after its formation in 2010, and since then he has alternated between being a successful actor and a global pop star, with two chart-topping albums and a number one single under his belt. Olly is an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+, anti-bullying and mental health causes, winning praise for his impassioned speeches from the stage at the Glastonbury Festival in 2016 and again in 2019. His return to acting as Ritchie Tozer in Russell T Davies’s Channel 4 drama It’s a Sin (2021) saw him showered with acclaim and award nominations.
