£465.00

Directed by Brian De Palma / Screenplay by Lawrence D. Cohen

Few individuals have made such a towering contribution to American cinema over the last half-century as the author Stephen King, whose novels and short stories have inspired more than 100 screen adaptations, among them such well-loved pictures as The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me and The Green Mile, together with a parade of first-rate horrors including The Shining, The Dead Zone, Christine, It, Salem’s Lot and The Mist. The book that began it all was King’s debut novel Carrie, published in 1974: a million-seller in paperback, it attracted the attention of filmmaker Brian De Palma, who secured the green light and a modest budget from United Artists. Released in 1976, De Palma’s picture was an instant sensation, translating the dark power of King’s writing to the screen with style and substance. Sissy Spacek heads the cast as troubled teenager Carrie White, bullied at school by her classmates and terrorised at home by her religious fanatic of a mother: a bravura performance from the great Piper Laurie. Unbeknown to Carrie’s tormentors, the onset of adolescence has brought with it an incipient gift for telekinesis - she can make objects move with her mind, losing self-control at moments of distress and high emotion - so when the bullies devise a cruel prank to humiliate Carrie at the high school prom, the scene is set for a spectacular and devastating finale. Carrie was a critical and commercial hit, burnishing the reputations of all involved. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie both received Oscar nominations - while a little further down the cast list, making his first major film appearance, is a newcomer by the name of John Travolta.
