Mercury - unframed
An oil painting on linen of the Roman god Mercury (Hermes in the Greek mythos), one of the twelve gods of Olympus. Mercury was the messenger of the gods and is usually depicted as an athletic and graceful youth. He is sporting the winged helm of Mercury engraved with the caduceus (the god's magic wand with two snakes entwining it) and brandishing the golden blade with which he beheaded the Argus the giant. Behind him is the Sun, with the planet Mercury transiting across its surface.
The model for this portrait was actor Omari Douglas, perhaps best known for HBO/Channel Four's It's A Sin.
