Marlene Dietrich

£375.00

Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) was a German-American singer and actor whose career spanned seven decades. Starting out in the cabarets and drag clubs of 1920s Berlin, she soon began to star in silent movies, but it was her role in Josef von Sternberg’s musical drama The Blue Angel (1930) which brought her international fame. Moving to Hollywood, she starred in six more of Sternberg’s pictures, and made films with other great directors including Billy Wilder, Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles. Besides her monumental screen presence and her celebrated musical tours, she was known for her outstanding humanitarian work during the Second World War, and for a string of love affairs which reads like a who’s who of the most famous men and women in Hollywood’s golden age. Her final movie was Just a Gigolo (1979), in which she starred opposite another legendary bisexual actor-singer, David Bowie.

Other films include: Destry Rides Again (1939), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), Touch of Evil (1958), Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)
