Edith Head
Edith Head
Edith Head (1897-1981) was an American costume designer whose groundbreaking work earned her no fewer than 35 Academy Award nominations, of which she won eight: she remains to this day the most awarded woman in the history of the Oscars. Those winning films include All About Eve (1950), Roman Holiday (1953) and The Sting (1973), and among the many stars she dressed were Mae West, Ingrid Bergman, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, John Wayne, Grace Kelly, Doris Day, Marlene Dietrich, Julie Andrews, Elvis Presley, and on many occasions Barbara Stanwyck - with whom she was rumoured to have had a relationship. Although she was twice married, Edith Head’s sexuality was an open secret in Hollywood. She is perhaps best known for her long professional relationship with Alfred Hitchcock, for whom she designed 11 films including Rear Window (1954), To Catch a Thief (1955), Vertigo (1958), and The Birds (1963). Immortality of another kind beckoned in 2004, when she provided the inspiration for the ultra-cool fashion designer Edna Mode (‘No capes!’) in Pixar’s The Incredibles.
Other films include: Sunset Boulevard (1950), White Christmas (1954), Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
