Christopher Nolan’s action-packed take on Homer’s epic poem, charting the adventures of the Greek hero Odysseus during his long voyage home from Troy, has become the most talked-about film of 2026, and in America the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. As might be expected from the director of Oppenheimer, Inception and Interstellar, this is a project conceived and executed on a grand scale: with a budget of $250 million, The Odyssey’s sprawling canvas of character and incident draws in locations as far afield as Greece, Scotland, Italy, Morocco and Iceland, although under Nolan’s meticulous eye the principal photography took a comparatively modest five months, even wrapping ahead of schedule. Matt Damon heads a star-studded cast in an adaptation which ambitiously seeks to remain faithful to the Homeric original while reimagining Odysseus as a moral hero for our own times: as a result, some of his more ruthless exploits (and all of his marital infidelities) are discreetly dropped from the narrative. Nolan’s film has drawn praise for reigniting an interest in classical literature at a time when the teaching of humanities is under threat, alongside some criticism from classicists unhappy with the ethical liberties taken by the adaptation - not to mention squeals of outrage from boneheaded racists upset by the apparently intolerable notion that Helen of Troy, a mythological character who hatched from a swan’s egg, might be played by a non-white actor. Whatever one’s take on Nolan’s Odyssey, its high-octane mix of magic, monsters, vengeance and heroism makes for a cinematic rollercoaster ride that has packed out picture houses across the globe.
