Alongside the fantasy boom of the early 1980s came a spate of werewolf pictures, with The Howling and An American Werewolf in London (both 1981) leading the pack. Michael Jackson promptly enlisted the American Werewolf team to handle his landmark Thriller video, and there was plenty more to come, including the 1985 movies Teen Wolf, Fright Night and Silver Bullet. Something that all of these pictures had in common was a modern-day setting and a sassy American attitude, but here in Britain there was one strange and beautiful film that took the werewolf myth back to its origins in folklore and fairytale, via the work of the English author Angela Carter. Her 1979 short story collection The Bloody Chamber explored the powerfully evocative feminist elements present in familiar folk tales, among them Little Red Riding Hood, which inspired several of Carter’s stories including The Company of Wolves - which in turn gave its name to the 1984 film adaptation on which she collaborated with director Neil Jordan. Together they wrote a screenplay structured as a cinematic anthology of short stories, interlacing the narrative of a young girl on the cusp of womanhood (Sarah Patterson) with a series of haunting werewolf tales told by her grandmother, played with relish by Angela Lansbury in a first-rate cast which also includes David Warner, Brian Glover, Graham Crowden and Terence Stamp. With its dreamlike atmosphere and erotically charged undertones, its fairytale forest alive with amorous boys and wolfish men, innocent girls and wise old women, The Company of Wolves is a fantasy film like no other. ‘Never stray from the path,’ warns grandmother, ‘and never trust a man whose eyebrows meet.’
