Directed by Duncan Jones / Screenplay by Nathan Parker

A psychological drama in the tradition of science fiction classics like Solaris and Silent Running, director Duncan Jones’s debut feature was shot at Shepperton Studios on a comparatively modest independent budget, making a virtue of its claustrophobically confined sets, and embracing old-school model work rather than costly CGI. Sam Rockwell stars as Sam Bell, the one-man crew of a mining facility on the far side of the Moon, where the discovery of a body triggers an existential crisis as he nears the end of his three-year tour of duty. A sharp, stylish picture brimming with atmosphere, Moon was garlanded with awards and launched its director on a science fiction trajectory: Duncan Jones’s subsequent pictures include Source Code (2011), Mute (2018) and Rogue Trooper (2025). Jones was happy to explain that his love of filmmaking had been inspired and encouraged from an early age by his famous father, David Bowie. “We had this old eight-millimetre one-stop camera and made these little movies together,” Jones recalled. “It’s great, one of those father-and-son things we used to do together.” In his teens, Jones was able to visit his father at work on film shoots: “I’d see the amazing sets being built, how the make-up worked. I hung out with Dad when he was doing Labyrinth. And I remember the amazing fifties Soho set on Absolute Beginners. All that made a huge impression on me.” Following the premiere of Moon at the Sundance Festival in 2009, Jones Senior declared: “It’s such a great movie. It’s hard to believe it’s his first. I’m so happy for him, and proud as Punch.”
