Directed by James Cameron / Screenplay by James Cameron

In the wake of his success with The Terminator, writer-director James Cameron was promptly snapped up by 20th Century Fox to deliver a sequel to another science fiction classic. While Ridley Scott’s original Alien (1979) had thrived on a suspenseful, low-key ‘less is more’ approach, Cameron’s blockbusting follow-up demonstrates that sometimes more is more, upping the stakes and piling on the action while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original. Scott’s Alien offers a futuristic twist on the format of the classic haunted house movie: a motley crew of travellers stumble upon a mysterious building which they foolhardily investigate. Cameron’s Aliens delivers another audacious genre-splice, this time mapping the story and style onto the mid-eighties vogue for Vietnam War movies. In place of a solitary alien picking off a crew of unarmed civilians on a run-down freighter, Cameron pits a swarm of the creatures against a battlecruiser full of space marines, armed to the teeth and swaggering with misplaced bravado. The ensuing thrills and spills deliver some unforgettable shock moments and a host of deliciously quotable lines (“Game over, man!”), but what gives Aliens its heart is a monumental central performance from Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley, sole survivor of the first film, who finds a reason to fight on when she rescues a young girl from the wreckage of the ravaged colony planet. Ripley’s final confrontation with the gigantic egg-laying Alien Queen - two formidable matriarchs intent on protecting their babies - brings the proceedings to a climax with another killer quote (“Get away from her, you bitch!”), and one of the all-time great action showdowns.
