Miriam Margolyes (born 1941) is a British-Australian actor, writer, raconteur and global treasure. As a student in the 1960s she began performing with the Cambridge Footlights, and made her television debut as a contestant in the first ever series of University Challenge. Her countless roles in film, television and radio include a string of unforgettable characters in the Blackadder series (1983-1988), Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films (2002-2011), the Nurse in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet (1996), and Mrs Mingott in Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence (1993), a role for which she won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress. Miriam is also renowned as a prodigiously talented voice artist, with roles including everything from a sheepdog in Babe (1995) to a Matchmaker in Mulan (1998), a seductive bunny in a fabled commercial for Cadbury’s Caramel, and an alien in the forthcoming 60th anniversary episode of Doctor Who. A self-styled ‘fat old Jewish dyke’, Miriam is adored the world over for her outspoken contributions to political discourse, her lifelong openness about her sexuality, and her unquenchable love of life.
